Jazz Ensemble: The Music of Ron Miles

We will focus on a selection of tunes from Ron's expansive catalog. From his first release in 1986 to his final album Rainbow Sign in 2019, Ron blended straight-ahead jazz, rock, country, folk, funk, pop, avant-garde, and gospel influences to create a style unique to him and his Colorado roots. Come celebrate the life and music of Ron Miles.

Prerequisites:

• Ability to read Chord Charts and Standard Notation
• Ability to play Major 7, minor 7, dominant, and minor 7 flat 5 chords
• Some experience with ensemble playing and improvisation

To ensure a great fit in this ensemble, Matt will reach out to prospective students following registration to schedule an introductory interview.

Matt Skellenger

ELECTRIC BASS, DRUM SET, GUITAR, MUSIC THEORY, PERCUSSION, PIANO/KEYBOARD

Born and raised in Denver, Matt has been composing, performing, recording, and teaching in Colorado for 30 years. He earned a B.A. in Music from Metro State University in 2002 where he studied with the great Ron Miles. Matt has also studied with world renowned bassist and educator, Victor Wooten. Wanting to share his musical experiences with more people, Matt began teaching at Swallow Hill in 2008. He teaches Electric Bass, Guitar, Jazz Ensembles, Music Theory, Little Swallows, Kids Guitar, Piano and Drums. He customizes lessons to each students’ interests, goals, and skill level. Matt focuses on playing by ear, music theory, chord charts, tablature, and standard notation. When Matt is not teaching, he is playing his bass, watching sports, and enjoying time with his family.
