In this two-part workshop, we will be learning Dave's haunting clawhammer banjo on "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me”. Van Ronk’s version of this traditional tune is timeless, reminding listeners and players alike how a few chords and a melody will stop us right in our tracks. Join Caleb Hall as he takes apart the tune, its history, and what is needed to perform it.
Prerequisites: This workshop is intended for clawhammer banjo players with a knowledge of chording, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and other basic moves on the banjo.

Caleb James Hall
CLAWHAMMER BANJO, FIDDLE*
Caleb James Hall (he/him/his) has a Bachelor of Music from Metropolitan State University of Denver. He has a deep love for American old-time music, which has led him to lead jams, participate in fiddle conventions, and support the old-time music scene in Denver. His teaching style caters to each student’s interests, goals, and skill levels, with a focus on developing strong aural skills. A gifted fiddler, Caleb specializes in the instrument’s folk and regional traditions which are most often learned by ear while utilizing different bowing and fretting hand techniques than students might encounter during classical training.

Hybrid classes are taught simultaneously online and in person at our Yale location. The hybrid class format allows our teachers to reach students who are unable to come to class in person while also still engaging with the students who are able to be physically present. When registering, please select which class method you will use for the class–in-person or online. This will allow your teacher to better prepare for class and support you as a student.
Please contact our front office if you have questions regarding how our Hybrid classes work!
