What happens in class... We learn and practice forms to create vocal music together spontaneously, without a score, chart, or leader. Based on the "Vocal River" practice developed by Master Improvisor Rhiannon, you'll learn the building blocks for creating improvised vocal compositions in collaboration with other singers.
Who should sign up... This is an intermediate level class, for confident singers who want to hone their improv skills. If you can match a pitch, hold a part, sing a harmony, blend with other singers, and be willing to experiment, you’ll fit right in. The most important requirement is a willingness to stretch your comfort zone a bit, no matter what level of singer you are.
What to expect... Every form we practice is a cappella, spontaneous, and improvisational. The forms range in participation from the entire group singing at the same time, to smaller breakouts, including duets, trios, etc.
What are the benefits... In addition to being a lot of fun, this practice helps you free up your creative brain and strengthen your music composition skills. You'll build skills in deep listening, trust, forgiveness, collaboration, generosity, and flexibility — important in both music and in life!
What else... Improvisation helps train the brain to adapt and respond to changing circumstances without fear. It strengthens the brain centers responsible for creative expression. Plus singing with other people calms the nervous system and boosts the feel-good chemicals in your body.
Bottom line: You’ll learn to sing better, be more confident and creative, and feel great in the process.
Prerequisites: Students should be able to match pitch, hold a rhythmic pattern (ostinato), and be comfortable soloing and singing in small groups.
Help us get in tune by registering early! To support our teachers and better accommodate the needs of our classes, we ask that students register at least 24 hours in advance of the class, lesson, and/or workshop.
